Density

Density is a product tradeoff

  • Beginner users often need more guidance and separation.
  • Expert users may need density and comparison.
  • The right density depends on task, risk, frequency, and device.
Weak versus strong

Loose

Weak

Can hide comparison and create too much scrolling.

Strong

Good for unfamiliar, risky, emotional, or low-frequency tasks.

Dense

Weak

Can overwhelm, crowd, or bury the next action.

Strong

Good for expert, frequent, comparative, or operational tasks.

Balanced

Weak

Compromises without a clear priority.

Strong

Uses groups, headings, and progressive detail.
